June 10, 1967 – May 5, 2026
There are some people whose impact can never fully be measured. They leave pieces of themselves everywhere they go — in communities built, in lives changed, in courage sparked, and in the people who loved them.
Today, we mourn the loss of Tania Chomiak-Salvi who left us on May 5, 2026. Tania was a founding member of Young Survival Coalition (YSC), a global advocate for young women affected by breast cancer, a devoted board leader, a woman of extraordinary service, and a deeply loved colleague, wife, and mother.
Tania helped build YSC in 1998 at a time when young women diagnosed with breast cancer were too often overlooked, underrepresented, and navigating the experience in isolation. After being diagnosed at a young age and early in her career, she transformed personal experience into purposeful action, helping lay the foundation for what would become a movement of advocacy, education, support, and connection for young adults facing breast cancer around the world.
But Tania’s advocacy did not stop at borders.
As her life and career took her across the globe, she carried her passion for awareness and support with her. While living in Poland from 2000 to 2002, she independently organized educational talks for women — often providing some of the first accessible information available about breast cancer in young women. In Italy, she volunteered with the European breast cancer advocacy network, Europa Donna, where she pioneered programs focused specifically on young women. In 2004, she was invited to speak at Europa Donna’s international conference in Germany, sharing her voice and insights with medical professionals and advocates from across Europe.
Whether in Belgium, Washington, or beyond, Tania built bridges. She connected people. She elevated conversations. She ensured that young women diagnosed with breast cancer were seen, heard, and considered. Her advocacy evolved because her compassion never stopped.
Tania’s commitment to service extended beyond advocacy work. Through her distinguished career as a Foreign Service Officer and Counselor for Public Diplomacy, she represented the values of connection, communication, and global understanding. She spoke Ukrainian, Russian, Polish, French, Italian, and conversational German and Dutch — not simply as languages, but as pathways to people and community.
She also gave generously of her leadership to YSC through service on the Board of Directors from 2014–2019, including serving as Board Secretary from 2018–2019. Her wisdom, perspective, humor, and heart helped shape the organization during pivotal years of growth. She even introduced YSC to Luca, her beloved husband, who would become YSC’s long-standing attorney — another example of how her fingerprints remain woven into the fabric of this organization.
And while Tania’s accomplishments were remarkable, those who knew her will remember far more than her résumé.
They will remember her boldness.
Her intelligence.
Her humor.
Her warmth.
Her candor.
Her laughter.
Her ability to make people feel connected and cared for.
She was funny and fearless. Loving and deeply loved. A woman who spoke with conviction, lived with purpose, and showed up fully for the people and causes she believed in.
Nearly 30 years after her original breast cancer diagnosis, Tania reflected in a recent interview with CURE:
“I had 28 years of nothing after initial treatment, except for a short blip of a new cancer.”
Even in the face of a lung cancer diagnosis in 2023, she continued to embody resilience, honesty, and grace.
Tania’s legacy lives on not only through YSC and the countless advocacy spaces she helped shape, but through every person who feels less alone because someone like her dared to speak up first.
We extend our deepest condolences to her husband, Luca, her sons, Paul and Stephen, and all who loved her around the world.
Thank you, Tania.
For your voice.
For your courage.
For your service.
For your laughter.
For helping build something that continues to change lives every single day.
You will never be forgotten.
