Meet Sami
Sami Mansfield is the founder of Cancer Wellness for Life, a organization focused on developing oncology exercise resources for individuals, hospitals, and corporations. She began her work in 2003 and was one of the first oncology exercise specialists in the US. She developed and leads BUILD, a functional exercise program for cancer survivors. This program offers onsite classes as well as encompasses a supportive community focused on fitness and wellness.
While Sami has been actively involved with exercise since she was 16 years old, she began to focus her career exclusively on cancer in 2003. Her early focus was on helping breast cancer survivors lose weight, recover after surgery and regain their energy.
Over time, her experience expanded into other disease types and stages including advanced cancer and with blood and marrow patients through transplant. She is regularly added to the care team even before these patients have surgery or treatment. Sami sees first hand the importance of exercise to reduce side effects, maintain strength and the ability to withstand and recover from aggressive treatments and surgeries. She is known to be very passionate about the importance of exercise and even motivates her clinical staff to be more active to take care of themselves.
While each patient requires a personalized exercise program, the similarity of the benefits of exercise are consistent across her patient population in that nearly all patients feel better, get stronger and can function at a higher level than those who don’t exercise. Because each patient is unique, having the ability to work with a highly trained cancer exercise specialist who understands the medical side of cancer is a significant advantage for those who access her services.
Sami is a certified cancer exercise trainer and a Crossfit Level 1 trainer. Her focus is to blend these together to help survivors meet their goals and live a healthier life. She currently leads a 10 week cancer crossfit program called Build at her local box in KC.
