In October, it can seem like the entire world goes pink. Breast Cancer Awareness Month began in 1985 as a way to promote mammograms as the best resource available at that time to detect breast cancer. The BCAM movement has evolved into worldwide awareness and funding initiatives.
The Pink Elephant in the Room
With so many companies turning their products pink, you might wonder what’s happening with your dollars when you purchase pink products. The term pink-washing has been used to describe companies that use consumer goodwill about breast cancer support without specific and clear funding to people affected by breast cancer.
YSC is proud that we only partner with companies who make their contributions explicit to all consumers.
Additionally, our partners play an important role in advocacy by informing their consumers that young women can and do get breast cancer and that YSC is their go-to resource.
Partners for Good
We know our community wants to shop responsibly during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. With that in mind, we want to encourage you to support the partners and products that support YSC and keep corporate responsibility as their top priority.
Handful of Bras
Handful’s partnership with YSC started as a personal one. Cary Goldberg, who works in Survivor Relations at Handful, was affiliated with the Portland YSC chapter for 7 years after her own diagnosis. For the 12.5% of women diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, Handful is donating 12.5% of the revenue from their Battle Cry Pink bras to YSC.
They also offer a variety of discounts and programs for breast cancer survivors year round.
Ford Warriors in Pink
We’re beyond grateful to have the support of Ford through their program Warriors in Pink. They have also recognized YSC as an organization providing vital support to those affected by breast cancer. This fall, Ford Warriors in Pink is hosting a bonus yoga class at the Wanderlust festival in Snowshoe, Statton and Squaw. Ford Warriors in Pink will donate $10 for each participant at these locations so you can feel good while getting your OM on.
