Meet Shubhada
Dr. Shubhada Dhage, a breast surgeon, is dedicated to treating New York City's underserved women and elucidating key factors in tumor progression, as the Co-Leader of the Perlmutter Cancer Disparities program and Co-Director of the Bellevue Hospital Breast Clinic (NYU Medical Center). Nearly 50% of her patients are under fifty years old, 80% are from non-English speaking countries, and most lack the education to understand their illness.
To maximize her impact, Dr. Dhage has setup programs for molecular research, patient decision-making, survivorship, doctor training, and even wellness (by using yoga for recovery). She’s collaborated with partners including the NYU Cancer Center (where she is an Associate Director), the NYU Global Health program, Biodigital (a digital animation startup), Ycat yoga therapy, the NYC Department of Health.
On a national level she is active in the American College of Surgeons (as a member of the Diversity committee and a representative for Young Fellows on the Board of Governors Education Pillar). To improve patient outcomes locally and internationally she has pursued a range of projects, including bench work in basic science research to develop a genomic tool to personalize breast cancer treatment, created unique patient education tools in three different languages, hosted global scholar-physicians from developing countries, worked with NYC’s Department of Health to address gaps in cancer screening and care, and conducted research on women’s health in Ghana and India.
At Bellevue she has found solutions to the challenge of consistently providing high quality, individualized care to patients from over 40 different countries who face many socio-cultural and economic barriers to improve patient outcomes and created a research program to address cancer disparities. She has presented in national forums, published, and has received grants from Avon, Komen Greater NYC and the Breast Cancer Alliance.
